First Impressions
Most travellers land in Guatemala City and go straight to Antigua, but the capital deserves at least a day. It is big, busy and has a bad reputation, but the historic centre (Zona 1) has beautiful buildings and markets, Zona 4 has trendy cafés, and the museums are the best place to understand Maya culture before you travel the country.
History & How Long to Stay
The Maya city of Kaminaljuyú stood here from about 1500 BC. The current city was founded in 1776 as the new Spanish capital, after earthquakes destroyed the old capital (today's Antigua) in 1773. Guatemala became independent from Spain in 1821. A civil war from 1960 to 1996 deeply affected the country, especially the Maya communities. Today Guatemala City is the largest city in Central America.

What earned its place
The main square with the cathedral (built from 1782). On its columns are the names of people who disappeared during the civil war. Behind it, the Mercado Central sells crafts, textiles and food.

Two museums on the Francisco Marroquín University campus: Popol Vuh has one of the best collections of Maya ceramics and art, and Ixchel shows Guatemala's traditional textiles (traje), village by village.

A giant relief map of Guatemala built in 1905, about 1,800 m², with exaggerated mountains and volcanoes. You view it from towers.

To Antigua: Uber (about 1 hour, depending on traffic) or a tourist shuttle from the airport.

Good to know
Keep in mind that traffic is very heavy at rush hours (7:00–9:00 and 17:00–19:00); plan airport trips with extra time.
