Overview
Duitama is a working city in the Boyacá highlands, not a classic tourist town, but it is a great base for the region. Its highlight is the Pueblito Boyacense, a small village that recreates the architecture of several Boyacá towns in one place, with white walls, colourful doors and flower-filled balconies. Around it are hot springs, lakes and important independence battlefields.
Duitama was an important Muisca settlement, ruled by the cacique Tundama, who fought the Spanish in the 16th century; the city takes its name from him. It is known as the "Civic Capital of Boyacá". Nearby, at the Pantano de Vargas (25 July 1819), Simón Bolívar's army and the Llanero lancers defeated the Spanish, a key battle on the way to the Battle of Boyacá and Colombia's independence two weeks later.

Things to Do
A small "village within the city" that recreates streets and houses inspired by Boyacá's traditional towns, like Villa de Leyva, Monguí, Ráquira, Tibasosa and Santa Rosa de Viterbo, each with its own architecture and colours. It has cafés, craft shops and small hotels. It is very photogenic, especially on a sunny morning.

Thermal pools fed by volcanic springs, next to a lake surrounded by hotels. Paipa is also famous for its cheese (queso Paipa).

One of the most beautiful towns in Colombia, with white and green houses, a stone bridge and leather football workshops; it is the start of the hike to the Páramo de Ocetá. Getting there: about 1 hour.
The largest lake in Colombia, at about 3,000 m, with a white sand beach (Playa Blanca) and fields of onions all around. Getting there: about 1.5 hours.

Fly into Bogotá (BOG).
By bus: frequent buses from Bogotá's Terminal del Norte or Terminal Salitre, about 4 hours.
By car: about 4 hours via Tunja.
Taxis in town; local buses or a car for Paipa, Monguí and Tota.
Keep in mind that Boyacá is cold at night; bring warm layers and a ruana.
