Overview
Quindío is the green heart of Colombia's coffee region: steep hills covered in coffee plants and banana trees, colourful towns with wooden balconies and the tallest palm trees in the world. It is relaxed, beautiful and very fun, especially at the Parque del Café, a theme park all about coffee.
The region was settled in the late 19th century by families from Antioquia during the "colonización antioqueña". Coffee became Colombia's main export in the 20th century, and the National Federation of Coffee Growers created the character Juan Valdez in 1958. An earthquake on 25 January 1999 destroyed much of Armenia and nearby towns, which were rebuilt. The Coffee Cultural Landscape became a UNESCO site in 2011. The Parque del Café opened in 1995.

Things to Do
A theme park in Montenegro, Quindío, about coffee and the culture of the region, with a coffee museum, a show of traditional dances, a cable car over the coffee hills and roller coasters. Don't miss the coffee trail through the plantations and the Show del Café.

A valley full of wax palms, Colombia's national tree, which can grow up to 60 m tall, the tallest palms in the world. The classic loop hike (about 12 km, 5 to 6 hours) goes through cloud forest, river crossings and the Acaime hummingbird house.
Price: small fees for private farms on the trail (COP 10,000–20,000 each) · Getting there: Willys jeep from Salento's main square, about COP 10,000 each way · Tip: start early; clouds cover the palms by afternoon.
The most famous town of the region, with colourful houses, the Calle Real of craft shops and the Mirador de Salento viewpoint over the valley.
Price: free · Tip: try trout with patacón, the local dish.
Visit a family farm to see how coffee is grown, harvested, washed and roasted, and taste it at the end. Farms near Salento, like Don Elias or El Ocaso, are popular.

A quieter, beautiful town with colourful balconies and a wooden viewpoint (Mirador Colina Iluminada) with views of three departments.

A farm theme park with animals and shows, good for families.
Price: about COP 70,000–100,000.
Colombia's national sport: throwing a heavy metal disc at a clay board with small gunpowder packets that explode on impact. Play it with beer in Salento.

By air: fly into Armenia (AXM) or Pereira (PEI) from Bogotá or Medellín.
By bus: from Medellín (about 6 hours) or Bogotá (7 to 8 hours) to Armenia or Pereira.
Buses: from Armenia to Salento, Filandia and Montenegro (Parque del Café).
Willys jeeps: the classic transport between Salento and Cocora.
Uber and taxis: in Armenia.
Keep in mind that it rains often, even in the dry season; bring a rain jacket and waterproof shoes for Cocora.
