Built on the exact spot where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared in 1917, this open-air chapel is the true heart of the sanctuary where pilgrims gather for prayer. Be respectful of the pilgrims who cross the square on their knees as an act of penance, and keep a quiet distance if taking photographs.

The Rede Expressos bus network provides frequent, comfortable, and direct connections from Lisbon and Porto, dropping you off very close to the sanctuary.
