Overview
Óbidos is a tiny walled town of white houses with blue and yellow borders, bougainvillea on every wall and a castle at the top. You can walk all the way around it on top of the medieval walls. It is very touristy on the main street, but it takes only a few steps into the side lanes to find quiet corners.
Óbidos was a Roman settlement and then a Moorish town until it was taken by the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, in 1148. In 1282 King Dinis gave it to his wife, Queen Isabel, as a wedding gift, and for centuries it was traditionally given to the queens of Portugal, which is why it is called the "Vila das Rainhas" (Town of Queens). In 2015 UNESCO named Óbidos a City of Literature because of its many bookshops.

Things to Do
The walls run for about 1.5 km around the town, and you can walk on top of most of them for views over the roofs and the countryside. Keep in mind that there are no railings and the path is narrow and uneven in places, so it is not for small children or anyone afraid of heights.

The local sour cherry liqueur, served in a small edible chocolate cup. You drink it and then eat the cup.

The main church, on the town square, where the 10-year-old King Afonso V married his cousin Isabel in 1441. Inside, the walls are covered in 17th-century tiles, and there are paintings by Josefa de Óbidos, one of the few women painters of the Portuguese baroque.

The castle at the top of the town is now a luxury hotel (Pousada), but you can see its walls and towers from outside and from the wall walk.

Óbidos hosts a Medieval Market in summer, an International Chocolate Festival in spring and the Óbidos Christmas Village (Vila Natal) in December.
Tip: check the dates before you go; prices for events vary.
The Óbidos lagoon is a calm spot for kayaking. Nazaré is famous for the biggest surfed waves in the world (in winter). Peniche is a fishing town and the departure point for boats to the Berlengas islands.

Fly into Lisbon (LIS).
By bus (best): the Rodotejo "Rápida Verde" express leaves from Campo Grande in Lisbon, takes about 1 hour and costs about €9.45 one way. Frequent departures, fewer at weekends.
By train: possible but slow (almost 3 hours) and the station is below the town.
By car: about 50 minutes via the A8 (with tolls); free parking outside the walls.
On foot. The town is small and car-free inside the walls.
Come early or late to avoid tour groups from Lisbon, which usually arrive between 10:00 and 15:00.
