First Impressions
Barichara is a small colonial town of white houses, terracotta roofs and stone streets that slope down a hill. It is very quiet, clean and photogenic, and many Colombians call it the most beautiful town in the country. There is not a lot to "do", and that is the point: slow walks, good food and the view over the valley.
History & How Long to Stay
The area was home to the Guane people. Barichara was founded in 1705 around a chapel built after a farmer said he saw the image of the Virgin on a rock; the name comes from the Guane word "barachala", meaning "good place to rest". Built with local sandstone and earth (tapia pisada), the town was declared a national monument in 1978. Several Colombian films and telenovelas have been filmed here.

What earned its place
A 9 km stone path built by the Guane and rebuilt in the 1860s by the German engineer Geo von Lengerke, going down to the tiny village of Guane. Look for fossils in the stones along the way. In Guane, visit the small paleontology museum and try sabajón (an egg liquor).

The viewpoint at the top of town looks over the Río Suárez valley. Next to it is a stone amphitheatre used for events.

The small chapels and the cemetery, known for its carved stone tombs by local artisans.

A workshop where you see how paper is made from plant fibres.

The local speciality is hormigas culonas, big toasted ants, sold in March to May. Also try cabro (roast goat), pepitoria (rice with goat offal) and arepa santandereana.
The adventure capital of Colombia, 30 to 40 minutes away: white-water rafting on the Río Fonce or Río Suárez, paragliding, caving and the Juan Curi waterfall.

One of the deepest canyons in South America, with a national park, a 6.3 km cable car across the canyon and viewpoints.
