Punta Cana is the classic Caribbean postcard: long white beaches, palm trees and turquoise water, with big all-inclusive resorts along the coast. Most people stay inside their resort, but keep in mind that the best moments are outside: a boat to Saona Island, swimming in a cenote or surfing at Macao.
History & How Long to Stay
Punta Cana was almost empty jungle and coconut farms until 1969, when Dominican businessman Frank Rainieri and American investor Theodore Kheel started building a small resort there. They opened Punta Cana International Airport in 1984, one of the first privately owned international airports in the world, and the area grew into the busiest tourist destination in the Caribbean.

Airport (PUJ): keep in mind that Uber cannot pick you up at the airport. Use a pre-booked transfer, a resort shuttle or the official taxis (fixed rates by zone).
From Santo Domingo: Expreso Bávaro buses (about 3 hours) or private transfer.
Getting around
Uber: works outside the airport, but some resorts limit pickups at the gate.
Taxis: fixed zone prices; confirm before getting in.
Guaguas: local minibuses along the main road, very cheap.
Good to know
Check sargassum forecasts before booking in spring and summer; east-facing beaches are more affected. Resorts on the south side (Cap Cana, Juanillo) often have less.
