El Chaltén is a tiny mountain village at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy, and it exists for hikers. Trails start right from the end of the streets, and in a few hours you are at turquoise lagoons under granite towers. It is windy, simple and full of outdoor people, with craft beer bars to celebrate after the hike.
History & How Long to Stay
El Chaltén is one of the youngest towns in Argentina: it was founded on 12 October 1985 to strengthen Argentina's claim in a border dispute with Chile. Its name comes from the Tehuelche name for Fitz Roy, "Chaltén", meaning "smoking mountain", because clouds often cover its peak. The mountain was first climbed in 1952 by Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone. It is known as Argentina's National Trekking Capital.

A flatter hike along a river valley to a lake with floating icebergs and the needle of Cerro Torre behind it. Distance: about 18 km return · Time needed: 6 to 7 hours.
A hike up to a viewpoint with views of both Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre at the same time, and Lago Viedma. Distance: about 20 km return · Time needed: 7 to 8 hours.
Short hikes from town (1 to 2 hours) with views over the village and the valley; perfect for arrival day or bad weather.
An easy, flat walk (about 1 hour each way) to a 20 m waterfall in the forest.
A lake 37 km north, reached by shuttle, with boat trips and a short hike to a hanging glacier.
