Overview
Houston is huge, hot and humid, and it does not try to look pretty. What it has is one of the best food scenes in the US (more than 145 languages are spoken here), a Museum District where many museums are free, and NASA. It is a city you have to know where to go, but when you do, it surprises you.
Brothers Augustus and John Allen founded Houston in 1836 and named it after Sam Houston, the general who had just won Texas independence at the nearby Battle of San Jacinto. The Spindletop oil discovery near Beaumont in 1901 and the Houston Ship Channel (1914) turned it into the energy capital of the world. In 1961 NASA chose Houston for its Manned Spacecraft Center, and "Houston" was the first word spoken from the Moon in 1969. Today it is the fourth-largest city in the US.

Things to Do
The official visitor centre of NASA's Johnson Space Center. See real spacecraft, moon rocks and a full-size space shuttle replica on top of the original carrier aircraft. The tram tour takes you into the Johnson Space Center to see the historic Mission Control room from the Apollo missions and the giant Saturn V rocket in Rocket Park.

Nineteen museums around Hermann Park, many free or free on certain days. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is one of the largest art museums in the US, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science has a dinosaur hall and gems.
Price: MFAH about $20–25 (free on Thursdays); Natural Science about $25.
The Menil (1987), designed by Renzo Piano, displays surrealist, African and Byzantine art for free. Nearby, the Rothko Chapel (1971) is a quiet, non-denominational space with 14 dark paintings by Mark Rothko.
Price: free · Tip: spend a few silent minutes in the chapel; it is very moving.
A green park along the bayou west of downtown. Under it is the Cistern, a 1926 underground drinking water reservoir with 221 concrete columns, used for art and sound installations.
Price: park free; Cistern tours about $10 · Tip: watch the bats come out from the Waugh Drive Bridge at dusk.
A downtown park with a lake, events and restaurants, next to the convention centre and the Astros' ballpark.

Try Tex-Mex and fajitas (popularised in Houston), Viet-Cajun crawfish (a local mix of Vietnamese and Louisiana food), Texas BBQ and the restaurants of Bellaire Boulevard in Chinatown.
A 173 m column (taller than the Washington Monument) on the battlefield where Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836.

A beach island with Victorian houses, the Pleasure Pier and the Strand historic district. Getting there: about 1 hour by car.

By car: Austin 2.5 to 3 hours, Dallas about 3.5 hours, New Orleans about 5 hours.
METRORail: $1.25 a ride; the Red Line links downtown, Midtown, the Museum District and NRG Park.
Uber and Lyft are the easiest way across the city.
Keep in mind that distances are big: Space Center Houston is 40 km from downtown. Many visitors rent a car for a day.
