First Impressions
Puebla is a colonial city of tiled facades, huge churches and sweets shops, only 2 hours from Mexico City but much calmer. Its blue-and-white Talavera pottery is everywhere, from kitchens to church domes, and it is the birthplace of mole poblano. Next door, Cholula has a giant pyramid with a church on top and the volcano Popocatépetl behind it.
History & How Long to Stay
The Spanish founded Puebla de los Ángeles in 1531 as a planned city between Mexico City and the port of Veracruz. Legend says angels drew the lines of its streets. It became a centre of ceramics, textiles and religious art. On 5 May 1862 the Mexican army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla, the origin of Cinco de Mayo. The historic centre became a UNESCO site in 1987, and Talavera craftsmanship was added to UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list in 2019.

A chapel finished in 1690, completely covered in gold leaf and carved stucco, once called the "eighth wonder of the world".

Founded in 1646 by Bishop Juan de Palafox, it is considered the first public library in the Americas. It holds more than 45,000 old books in tall cedar shelves and is on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.

Visit a certified Talavera workshop, such as Uriarte (founded in 1824), to see how the pottery is still made by hand with methods from the 16th century.

Mole poblano, a dark sauce with chillies and chocolate, is said to have been invented by nuns in a Puebla convent. In August and September, try chiles en nogada, stuffed peppers with walnut sauce and pomegranate in the colours of the Mexican flag. Cemitas are big sesame-bun sandwiches.
Tip: buy camotes (sweet potato candies) on Calle de los Dulces (6 Oriente).
The Great Pyramid of Cholula (Tlachihualtepetl) is the largest pyramid in the world by volume, though it looks like a hill because it is covered in grass. The Spanish built the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios on top in 1594. You can walk through part of the tunnels inside.
