First Impressions
Monterrey is a modern, industrial and rich city surrounded by dramatic mountains, especially the Cerro de la Silla ("Saddle Hill"). It is less touristy than other Mexican cities, but it has big urban parks, great museums and outdoor adventures less than an hour away. It is also the home of carne asada and cabrito (roast kid goat).
History & How Long to Stay
Diego de Montemayor founded the city in 1596. For a long time it was a small frontier town, but at the end of the 19th century it became Mexico's industrial capital: the Cervecería Cuauhtémoc brewery opened in 1890 and the Fundidora steelworks in 1900, the first in Latin America. The old steelworks closed in 1986 and became Parque Fundidora. Monterrey was a host city of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

What earned its place
An artificial river walk (2.5 km) that links the Macroplaza with Parque Fundidora. You can walk it or take a boat along the canal.
Price: walking free; boat about MXN 60–100 · Tip: go in the late afternoon when it is cooler.
The old steelworks, now a huge park with industrial towers, lakes and museums. Horno 3, a restored blast furnace, has a museum about steel and a viewpoint at the top.
Price: park free; Horno 3 about MXN 150–250.
The old quarter, with colourful colonial houses, bars and cafés, very lively at night.

The history museum covers Mexico from the pre-Hispanic era to today. MARCO is the contemporary art museum, known for its giant dove sculpture by Juan Soriano.
Price: about MXN 50–100 each.
Caves about 45 minutes from the city, inside a mountain. A cable car takes you up to the entrance, then a 2.5 km path goes through halls of stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years.

A forest park in the Sierra Madre, above San Pedro, with hiking trails and views over the city.
Price: small entry fee per person and per car.
A 25 m "horsetail" waterfall in Santiago, a pretty "Pueblo Mágico" about 45 minutes south.

Monterrey is famous for cabrito (roast young goat), machacado con huevo (dried beef with eggs) and Sunday carne asada, a family ritual.
