Lake Bled Travel Guide 2026: Island, Castle & Prices

The only natural island in Slovenia. You climb 99 stone steps from the boat to the baroque Church of the Assumption of Mary. Inside hangs a "wishing bell" from 1534: legend says a young widow donated a bell for her husband, it sank in a storm, and the Pope later sent this one. Anyone who rings it three times and makes a wish will have it come true. Tradition says that grooms carry their brides up the 99 steps on their wedding day.

Price: church about €6–8 · Time needed: 1 hour on the island · Tip: there is often a queue to ring the bell; go early.

The flat-bottomed wooden boats with colourful awnings are rowed standing up by the pletnarji, using a technique passed down in the same families since the 18th century. The ride to the island takes about 20 minutes, and the boat waits for you for about 40 minutes.

Price: about €15–18 per person return · Tip: if you prefer, rent your own rowboat for about €18–25 per hour and row yourself.

The castle sits on a cliff 130 m above the lake. Inside are a museum about Bled's history, a printing workshop where you can print your own certificate on an old press, a wine cellar and a terrace with the most famous view of the island.

Price: about €15–18 · Hours: daily, longer in summer · Time needed: 1.5 hours · Tip: walk up the steep path from the town in about 15 minutes.

The path around the lake is about 6 km long and flat, with benches, swimming spots and views of the island from every side. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Price: free · Tip: go at sunrise when the water is like a mirror.

The classic postcard view of the island and the castle is from these two viewpoints on the southwest side of the lake. Ojstrica is a 20-minute climb; Mala Osojnica is higher and steeper, with ladders near the top.

Price: free · Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours · Tip: wear proper shoes; roots and rocks get slippery.

The famous cream cake, with a layer of vanilla custard and a layer of whipped cream between thin puff pastry, was created in 1953 by the pastry chef Ištvan Lukačević at the Hotel Park. They have sold millions since.

Price: about €4–5 at Café Park · Tip: eat it on the terrace facing the lake.

A 1.6 km wooden boardwalk through a narrow gorge with the turquoise Radovna river, ending at the 13 m Šum waterfall. It is 4 km from Bled.

Price: about €10; buy a timed ticket online · Season: spring to autumn · Time needed: 2 hours · Tip: the walk is one-way, so plan your way back.

In summer the water reaches about 22–25°C. There are free swimming spots along the path, and the paid Grajsko Kopališče (Castle Bathing Area) under the castle. You can also rent SUPs and kayaks.

Price: SUP or kayak about €12–18 per hour.

A larger, wilder lake inside Triglav National Park, 30 minutes by bus. Take the cable car up Vogel for views of the Julian Alps, or walk to Savica waterfall.

Getting there: bus from Bled, about 30 to 40 minutes.
