Flores is a candy-colored island town in the middle of a Peten lake. The reason you come is Tikal, the lost Mayan jungle city an hour north.
Do the sunrise tour: leave Flores around 3am, climb Temple IV in the dark, and watch the mist burn off five pyramid tops rising above the canopy while howler monkeys call in every direction. It is a top-five moment for any traveler.

Transit Tips
Flights to Mundo Maya Airport are the fastest way to reach Flores from Guatemala City; road travel is long and can be rough. For Tikal, hire a licensed guide at the park entrance or arrange a guided transfer from Flores; dawn departures are common and recommended.
Shared tourist shuttles connect Antigua, Lake Atitlan, and Flores. Book through your hostel a day ahead and expect 8 to 15 dollar rides.
Safer and cheaper than street taxis in the capital. Confirm the plate and driver name before getting in.
Standard in Antigua and small towns. Agree on the fare before you climb in; 1 to 3 dollars is normal for short hops.
